Freedom 251 smartphone was launched recently by Ringing Bells Pvt. Ltd., and it had gained so much popularity all around the world in no time. The only thing, which made this phone go viral is its price, which is just Rs.251 ($3.8).After its release, other smartphone manufacturers, and people filed so many cases against Ringing Bells, asking every single detail about the device and price of each component of it so that they can figure out how this smartphone is so cheap. In February, this company launched its first ever controversial smartphone which created a global buzz in no time. After getting so many FIRs against this company, finally, a hearing has been done in Allahabad High Court, where Justice B.K. Narayan and R.N. Mishra have ordered Ringing Bells to reply back till next hearing, which is one May 18. During the time of hearing, Court keeps on asking lawyers about how an offence under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was made out against the makers of ‘Freedom 251’ smartphone but no cogent reply was offered.

Mohit Goel is director of Ringing Bells, and Ashok Chaddha is president of the company. In March, first information report (FIR) was filed against both of them and the company under Section 420 of the IPC as well as the Information Technology (IT) Act. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kirit Somaiya, was one of the person to file the complaint against this company.

“We are very happy with today’s (Friday’s) order. We shall now press for the quashing of the FIR as there is no merit in it and extraneous factors have gone into its lodging. This FIR is a strategy to derail the timely launch of the flagship product of the company,” said Abhishek Vikram, counsel for Ringing Bells.

“The company has already sold 28,000 units of its other products and has developed innovative strategies to meet its cost for delivering the smartphone for Rs.251 to its customers. The company’s aim is to reduce the digital divide between urban and rural India by selling the smartphone for Rs.251,” Vikram added.

Freedom 251 was launched back in February, and the thing to note down about this smartphone is that at the time of launching, BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi was also present at the launching ceremony. This phone have a 4-inch qHD IPS display, along with 3.2-megapixel primary and a 0.3-megapixel front camera. However, several questions were raised when they have revealed the price of the phone because a smartphone with such configurations can’t be sold in less than Rs.2,300-2,400.

The booking period is over, and millions of people have booked the phone already. According to the company, first 25 lakh customers will get the mobile at first come first serve basis, rest will have to wait for another sale, and their money will be refunded back to them. Freedom 251 is still yet to arrive in people’s hand, and if you too know something about it, then let us know about it via comments below.
